Ayurvedic Remedies for Cough and Cold

We all experience Cough and Cold as it’s a very initial reaction of our immune system (body’s defense system), A sign that our body fighting with pathogens. When our defense system is already fighting with invaders, we try to help our immune system from outside by taking some home remedies, over-the-counter drugs, or prescripted medicines.

Ayurveda suggests us the following remedies for cough and cold and building immunity. The cough and Cold problem are basically due to aggravated Kapha Dosha and all these remedies help to increase Pitta (Fire) in the body to balance aggravated Kapha. Ayurveda also suggests keeping the nasal cavities clean by taking steam for proper Prana flow.

  • Take 1/2 teaspoon of ginger powder with 1 teaspoon of honey. Black pepper can also be added.                                                                                                 
  • Chewing a piece of fresh ginger with a little salt on it will ease coughs.
  • Half a cup of warm water mixed with one teaspoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of honey can be taken several times a day.
  • Equal quantities of powdered fenugreek seeds, turmeric, and ginger powder can be mixed together. One teaspoon can be taken in the morning and evening.                                                                                                                                     
  • In cases of a sore throat, a clove or two cardamoms or a few raisins can be chewed.                                                                                                                                        
  • Gargling with warm salty water is also beneficial. This can be done two or three times a day.
