Prana, Ojas, Tejas and Tridosha

Doshas have a deeper level of function crucial for the practice of Yoga. This is the higher or yogic aspect of Ayurvedic science. The three subtle counterparts of the Doshas are called Prana, Tejas, and Ojas, or “three vital essences”. These are the root forms of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha which, if reoriented properly, unfold the extraordinary potentials of yogic development. Prana, Tejas, and Ojas are the essential or positive forms of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha that sustain positive vitality.

PRANA – Primal life-force the subtle energy of air, the master force and guiding intelligence behind all psychophysical processes, responsible for the coordination of breath, senses, mind, and consciousness.

OJAS – Primal Vigor – the subtle energy of water, the internalized essence of digested food, water, air, impressions and thought, the basis for patience, control of the senses, and mental endurance.

TEJAS – Inner Radiance – the subtle energy of fire or radiance of vitality through which we digest air, impressions, and thoughts.

Ultimately, Ayurveda seeks to reduce disease, particularly those that are chronic, and increase positive health in the body and mind via these three vital essences that aid in renewal and transformation. Increased prana is associated with enthusiasm, adaptability and creativity, all of which are considered necessary when pursuing a spiritual path in yoga and to enable one to perform. Tejas is claimed to provide courage, fearlessness and insight and to be important when making decisions. Lastly, ojas is considered to create peace, confidence and patience to maintain consistent development and sustain continued effort.
